Animation 02 (Animating a Figure)

Art Foundations 1107: Time

Project Description:

This project introduces the skills of Animation, Photoshop, and After Effects.  Students will focus on creating a successful short video that utilizes the Elements and Principles of Art in an effective manner. The theme of this project is communication (creating a moving figure to add to the illustration of a saying or phrase).

Form: The goal of the project is to use moving images and animation to create the illusion of movement and transformation. Students will think of the bounding box of the film “frame” as a compositional space that changes and transforms, allowing for multiple compositional “moments.”

Content: The goal is to use our animation software and use the FORM of the compositional space to use Photoshop and After Effects to create a "hinged puppet" that will augment the Animation 01 project featuring a phrase or saying.

The project must utilize the following:

  • Use of Animation

  • Use of Photoshop

  • Use of After Effects

  • Use of Type

  • Add “credits” for music, etc

  • Create a portfolio website and add the work you created for this project to your portfolio page.

Elements: Color, Light, Space, Time/Movement

Principles: Emphasis, Proportion, Rhythm

In Preparation:

Create a character that you would like to add to the Animation 01 phrase or saying. It could be a full body that moves around the frame, a face, or anything else "figurative" that you could add that would make your earlier project even more successful.

Ideation/Visualization:

  • Create 5 pages of sketches of brainstormed ideas about the kind of "figure" you could add. There should be at least 2 sketches per page. Also work out the color scheme you intend to use for the figure.

  • Then use as many pages as needed to make a completely finished sketch of the character and components you will create to animate your figure. These components should be labeled and diagramed in the sketches.
